The Ecology Hall of Fame

This web site honors the heroes of the environmental movement -- those individuals who have had the greatest positive inpact. We include people under three categories, General, Living Legends, and Martyrs.

The General inductees are typified by our six charter Inductees:, Henry Thoreau, John Muir, Rachel Carson, John Burroughs, Alan Chadwick, and Aldo Leopold. Each of these six made profound contributions to the environmental movement. Except for Burroughs and Chadwick, they all continue to directly influence new generations of environmentalists through their published writings. The Living Legends are those individuals who continue to influence the environmental movement through their lives, actions, and writings. The Martyrs are, as the name suggests, those who have had their most profound impact by their deaths.

In the future, we hope to build a museum-type facility for The Ecology Hall of Fame as a national center for environmental education. This facility would multi-media educational exhibits teaching the simple truth that individuals, by remaking themselves, can remake the world. This museum will be built on a site in Santa Cruz County, California, overlooking Monterey Bay.

We invite you to participate in the development of the Ecology Hall of Fame. Please nominate a person you think should be inducted.

If you would like to help with the development of this web site, please contact us at ecotopia@pacweb.com. We are in need of volunteers to research and write informational pages about Chico Mendes, David Chain, Judi Bari, E. O. Wilson, Jacques Cousteau and others.

The Ecology Hall of Fame is a project of EcoTopia/USA, a California non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting ecological thinking and ecological behavior, especially in Santa Cruz County.
