Henry Thoreau
Thoreau published only two books during his life. Neither was a financial success. Yet one of those books, Walden, is probably the best selling book in American history. It is certainly the book that had the most impact on the development of the environmental movement. From another of his works, the essay "Walking," comes the rallying cry of the supporters of wilderness preservation--"In wildness is the preservation of the world."
